It is not every season that we get the chance to celebrate the playing career of a Trojan held in such high esteem as Connor Whitla.
Within the Club, across AFI, and on the continent, Whitla garnered a fearsome reputation on the defensive side of the ball that few can match. 🛡️
Last month, he decided to hang up the cleats after winning his sixth Shamrock Bowl! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Head Coach, Phil Gunning said, “It’s been a privilege to know Connor, having lined up against and alongside him and, in recent years, to coach him.
Few players have embodied toughness and grit the way he has, setting the tone on the defensive side of the ball with every snap. An ever stoic presence, yielding no quarter to opposition, perhaps the most surprising insight I can offer is the man’s deep knowledge of the X & Os, and his fingerprints on the strategy of the Trojans’ defensive units through his almost two decades at the club.
Beyond his impact solely as a player, he gave just as much to the team as a coach and a captain, helping raise the standard for and of those around him and passing on knowledge to the next generation of Trojans.
To see him finish his career as a champion is fitting, and a testament to his unwavering commitment to domination he’s shown throughout his time in the game. He retires not just as a player but as one of the greatest Trojans to ever pull on a jersey, and I cant wait to see where his journey with the club goes from here.”
We wish you all the best for retirement, Connor, and we cannot thank you enough for all you’ve done to bring greatness to this Club! 💚
